Jim Marshall, who died today at 74; was known as the world’s pre-eminent Rock & Roll Photographer. For more than a half century, he traveled the world capturing Rock & Roll’s most iconic figures such as Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, and Bob Dylan in all of their glory. He was the chief photographer at Woodstock and was the only photographer granted backstage access to the Beatles final concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1966. Rolling Stone magazine once quoted Marshall saying " I have no kids. My photographs are my children." Jim has been credited with over 500 album covers throughout his vast career, and his photographs are cherished all over the world. Jim has published 4 books featuring exclusively his own work, and numerous other collaborations with other photographers including “Match Point”, with Timothy White which was released earlier this month. His book titled “Proof* serves as a “best of” collection, and catalogues many of his most important photographs, many of which are available for purchase at the Morrison Hotel galleries in New York City.
RIP Jim Marshall. 1936-2010
